Chrysler has recalled 22,776 of its 2024 Pacificas and Voyagers.
UPDATE (May 1, 2024): Added to the links at the bottom of this post, Chrysler has now produced both repair instructions and an owner notification letter. Chrysler will pay dealers for (1) 24 minutes of technician time to “inspect” and update antilock braking and engine control software in affected vehicles and (2) a loaner vehicle during the repair.
Modern vehicles pull data from many different sources to determine and alter how your vehicle performs. Traction control often relies on data about road conditions if a vehicle can sense rain, wheel rotation speeds, steering angle, engine performance, and more. If any of these data sources fail, traction control may fail.
Normally, our firm sees traction control systems fail when a sensor or component relaying sensor data fails.
Brilliantly, in this case, the recalled vehicles were built so that the traction control system would track what was happening with acceleration by monitoring how far drivers depressed the gas pedal.
That might be just fine.
Until the driver releases the gas pedal because they’re using cruise control.
As Chrysler has explained it, resulting traction control deactivation may allow the wheels to slip and “can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning.”
Well, that hardly seems ideal.
The manufacturer attributes the problem to software, meaning they should be able to repair the vehicles as soon as they can create and test new code; they don’t need to ramp up production of new parts. Even so, there is no estimate beyond a second quarter 2024. The manufacturer will start sending out letters to alert owners on May 17, 2024.
California consumers may be entitled to relief under the Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act, with Chrysler picking up litigation fees and costs as long as the consumer prevails.
